About This Image

This aerial image shows The Gateway Arch located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri where the city was founded. The Arch is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and serves as the anchor for the Core of Discovery, a family friendly attractions' district that spans from the St. Louis Riverfront to Citygarden. At 630 feet (192 meters), it is the tallest man-made monument in the United States and was built to commemorate westward expansion. The Arch opened to the public on June 10, 1967 and attracts four million visitors each year.
