About This Image

This image shows the tens of thousands people gathered at St. Peter’s square to celebrate Easter Mass at the Vatican. According to news reports, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated 2011 Easter Mass at an altar set up on the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City under a canopy to shield him from rain or sun. Vatican City, an enclave of Rome, Italy, extends from the banks of the Tiber River to the Vatican Hills of western Rome.
