About This Image
This one-meter resolution satellite image shows the Indian Gulch Fire burning near Golden in Jefferson County, Colorado. The image was collected by GeoEye’s IKONOS satellite using its near-infrared sensor. Areas depicted in red highlight the differences in vegetation of the forest. The darkest shade of red shows the healthiest vegetation and the burned areas appear as dark green and black. Some flames can be seen west of the smoke in the lower middle portion of the image. According to news reports, as of March 24, the fire had consumed 1,500 acres and was only 25 percent contained. This type of imagery may be used to assess and measure damage to individual structures, forest and other types of land cover—especially when compared to a true-color image of the same area. The imagery is also used for fire modeling, disaster preparedness, insurance and risk management and disaster mitigation efforts to control erosion or flooding after the fire is out.
