This half-meter resolution satellite image shows fire damage to an area southwest of Gold Hill along Highway 52, located approximately six miles northwest of Boulder, Colorado. The image was collected on Sept. 8, 2010 by the GeoEye-1 satellite, two days after the Fourmile Canyon Fire ripped through the area. According to the U.S. Forest Service, as of Sept. 8 when the image was taken, the fire had consumed almost 6,400 acres and destroyed over 135 structures. This type of imagery may be used to assess and measure damage to individual structures, forest and other types of land cover. It also is used for fire modeling, disaster preparedness, insurance and risk management and disaster mitigation efforts to control erosion or flooding after the fire is out.
