This half-meter resolution satellite image shows the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant approximately one month after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Oshika Peninsula on March 11, 2011. According to news reports, this is the largest earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history, the fifth largest in the world, and Japan has since suffered multiple quakes and aftershocks. The image was taken on April 12, 2011 by the GeoEye-1 satellite at 10:13 a.m., on the same day Japanese nuclear safety officials raised the nuclear alert level at the plant from five to the maximum seven level.
