About This Image
This one-meter resolution image shows the flooded General DeWitt Spain Airport which is a civil, public airport located five miles (8 km) northwest of the central business district of Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. It is owned and operated by the Memphis - Shelby County Airport Authority. According to news reports the great Mississippi River flood of 2011 crested in Memphis on May 11, one day after GeoEye tasked its IKONOS satellite to collect the image on May 10, 2011 at 12:10 p.m. local time. This imagery is especially useful when compared to the “pre-flood” image collected April 18, 2006 showing the same area. The comparison images could be used to detect change, assess and measure damage to buildings, facilities, runways and other structures. It could also be used for disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
