About This Image

This half-meter resolution image was taken June 25, 2011 by the GeoEye-1 satellite and shows the flooded Souris River and surrounding neighborhoods in Minot, North Dakota. According to news reports, on June 26 the floodwaters crested 1561.72 feet above sea level, broke the 130-year-old record by almost four feet and then began subsiding. Over 4,000 homes were submerged to their roofs, multiple high-rise buildings were damaged and one quarter of Minot’s population had been displaced. This imagery is especially useful when compared to the one-meter resolution “pre-flooding” image collected May 30, 2009 by the IKONOS satellite showing the same area. The comparison images could be used to detect change, assess and measure damage to buildings, facilities, bridges and other critical infrastructure. They could also be used for disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
