About This Image
This half-meter resolution image shows the flooded Missouri River and adjacent neighborhood just north of Bismarck, North Dakota. According to news reports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been managing the sustained release of water from the Garrison Dam Spillway gates which covers approximately 50 miles of levees built in the Bismarck area. GeoEye tasked its GeoEye-1 satellite to collect the image on June 3, 2011 on the same day news reports cited the beginning of the controlled flooding. This imagery is especially useful when compared to the “before” image collected November 12, 2010 showing the same area. The comparison images could be used to detect change, assess and measure damage to buildings, facilities, runways and other structures. They could also be used for disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
