This half-meter resolution satellite image shows The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a private research university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT has five schools and one college, containing a total of 32 academic departments, with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research. On April 10, 2011, MIT just celebrated it's 150th anniversary or sesquicentennial. The institute held a series of academic programs, exhibits, festivals, and other events from January 7 to June 5, 2011 to mark its original charter, signed on April 10, 1861. The image was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite on May 20, 2009 while flying 423 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,000 mph.
