This half-meter resolution satellite image of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was taken three days after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Oshika Peninsula on March 11, 2011. According to news reports, this is the largest earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history and the fifth largest in the world. The image was taken by the GeoEye-1 satellite at 10:56 a.m. (local time) on March 14, 2011 from 423 miles in space as it moved from north to south over Japan at a speed of four miles per second.
