The Taklamakan Desert is one of the largest sandy deserts in the world and experiences extreme cold—sometimes well below 20 degrees Celsius or four degrees below Fahrenheit. Two branches of the ancient Silk Road cross the Taklamakan Desert’s northern and southern edges.
