Historical global ocean color and chlorophyll-a data are available for research
and commercial applications from DigitalGlobe's Orbview-2 (OV-2) satellite. The satellite,
with its Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), operated from August 1997
– February 2011. OrbView-2 made priceless contributions to the study of our oceans,
ecosystems, global climate change and other areas of great importance to society.
Knowledge of ocean color provides our only large-scale window into the ocean ecosystem
and is the only way to take a global view of the Earth's biosphere. Since water
covers three quarters of the Earth, imagery from OrbView-2 helped us understand
what is happening to the entire Earth's ecosystem - both water and land. OrbView-2
will long be remembered as the "gold standard" for ocean color monitoring, and DigitalGlobe
is proud to have been a contributor to the International Ocean-Color program. Researchers
who collected OV-2 data with their own HRPT stations can still benefit from these
data. Please contact DigitalGlobe marineservices@geoeye.com
