Fun Facts

GeoEye-1 travels 681 kilometers (423 miles) above the Earth's surface, a comparable distance between Washington, D.C. and Boston.


IKONOS travels 681 kilometers (423 miles) above the Earth's surface, a comparable distance between Rome and Milan.


At 4,300 pounds, the GeoEye-1 satellite weighs about as much as one mid-size car, four horses, or 300 bowling balls.


GeoEye-1 is able to image any location on Earth while traveling 17,000 miles per hour.


Both GeoEye-1 and IKONOS orbit the Earth every 98 minutes, 15 times a day passing over the Equator at 10:30 a.m.
