IKONOS
First Image Series
Santorini, Greece The northern end of Greek island of Santorini
is shown in this 4-meter resolution color image from the IKONOS
satellite. The island, located in the middle of the Aegean Sea,
is known for its picturesque villages of white houses perched atop
a volcanic caldera. The villages of Oia and Finikia are shown in
this image.
Archaelogists believe that the volcanic island
of Stronglii was shattered in a cataclysmic eruption in about 1550
BC. Its remaining fragments make up the islands of Thera, Therasia
and Aspronisi. The sinking of the island is possibly related to
mythical Atlantis.
