Lost
Mayan City of Cancuen (Guatemala)
In
the mud and dense forests of Guatemala, American and Guatemalan
scientists recently announced the discovery of an immense "lost"
city called Cancuen. The city, one of the most important commercial
trade centers in the Mayan world for more than 1200 years, dates
back to 400 BC and had been ignored by scientists and looters for
more than 100 years. The name means "Place of the Serpent"
in ancient Maya.
This
Landsat 5 TM "browse" image from June 23, 2000 shows the
general area of the lost city.
